obviously not going very quickly or easily, allen. the new interim chief could be on the job here for six months or more. >> len, quickly, one thing about the search for the new chief. i had kind of understood they had to start over, start from scratch. is that the case? >> reporter: that's right. it's reported that the city manager who has been tasked with finding the new chief has had narrowed down the candidates to about 3 candidates and threw them out and said, okay, let's start over because the community wasn't happy with some of the choices being made so a fine line between what the officers and the department needs as well as what the community needs. that's the hard part. >> thank you, len ramirez in san jose. oakland is setting its sights on a high-profile crime- fighting consultant to curb a spike in gun violence. the city is prepared to pay legendary lawmaker bill bratton big bucks for his advice and it could move a step closer to hiring him tonight. but cbs 5 reporter joe vazquez

tells many oaklanders are already trying to stop the super cop. joe. >> reporter: hey, liz, you know, our interview with bratton yesterday caused quite a stir here at city hall. let me show you some video. now, there are a lot of people who support bratton but these folks were not among them. these are protestors who gathered outside a short while ago. they went inside later on to pack the city council committee meeting where they are deciding on the contract of william bratton. some of these protestors said they were angry at the former police chief of l.a. and new york for standing by the controversial police policy called "stop & frisk." >> i'm sorry that any police department in america that tries to function without some form of "stop & frisk" or whatever terminology they use is doomed to failure. >> reporter: "stop & frisk," staunchly defended by bill bratton in a cbs 5 interview yesterday is validated by the u.s. supreme court that says if an officer has reasonable suspicion that someone is engage in criminal activity, then the officer has the right

to stop and search that person. >> for new city to say they don't do stop and friction, i'm sorry they don't know what the hell they are talking about. >> it's like chasing your tail. >> reporter: this civil rights attorney says oakland as tried "stop & frisk" in the past and went too far. siegel claims that's why the police department is now being overseen by a federal judge. >> it's the very same kind of tactic. it's very ayes, sirrive on- street policing directed at people of color simply because they are people of color in a poor neighborhood. >> reporter: is there not a way to do this without directing it at people of color? >> sure. we could go up to montclair or piedmont avenue and stop middle class white women on the way to the supermarket and ask them to empty their purses and submit to pat searches but that's not going to happen. >> let's weight to get the vote for the contract -- let's wait for the vote to get the contract before you interview

him again. that was our concern. >> reporter: what's the concern? that he is too truthful? >> no. but those who are so opposed to him will just use that against him as another source of you see, you see, and won't take it in full context. >> reporter: what does chief howard jordan have to say? it's safe to say he is quite frustrated by all hubbub raised by bratton's remarks. a few minutes ago he had an impromptu news conference to clarify his stance. >> putting a racial profiling we expect our officers to continue to practiced good constitutional policing so i don't agree that this "stop & frisk" issue is something that we need deal with here in oakland. >> just remember this okay? i'm the police chief. i'm the guy that gets to decide what practice we're going to do and how we're going to do it because i'm the person that's going to be held accountable so i want to make that very clear. bill bratton will be giving me advice and it's up to me to

implement it and how i do it and if i do it is really on my shoulders. >> reporter: so bill bratton hasn't even arrived, he hasn't even been hired yet, the committee will meet tonight and decide whether to hire him. and if so, it has to go to the full council sometime next week. >> all right, creating a lot of buzz there, though. thank you, joe and a new crime-fighting plan is in the works for oakland. today the city council's finance committee approved funding to rebuild the police department. the money would help hire civilian police technicians, hire ten deputy sheriffs for 30 days to help patrol the streets and would fund a new police academy which would start in september. the city council is expected to approve that measure next week. new tonight san francisco police have identified the suspect in a brutal robbery that ended with the death of a dog. 35-year-old barrett is wanted for robbery and animal cruelty. officers say on december 28 he approached a woman on the corner of leavenworth and

golden gate avenue and demanded money. the victim complied but her dog began barking. that's when the suspect grabbed the dog and threw it in the middle of the street. the dog died as a result of the injuries. we are in for a chilly night. but the cold snap is starting to loosen its grip. casinos are cleaning up after subzero temperatures in tahoe caused burst pipes. thousands of gallons of water rushed down 18 stories at hurrahs affecting many stores and two sprinkler heads broke at harvey's casino. chief meteorologist paul deanno keeping an eye on our temperatures with our brand-new mobile weather lab. >> reporter: it's been out for two nights now so we are beginning to see comparisons last night to tonight. it's still chilly tonight make no mistake about that but here at the embarcadero by the ferry building we are four degrees milder tonight compared to last night so that warmer trend has begun and we'll take some baby

contacts with other kids and everyone is encourage to get a flu shot. the district is urging parents to bring kid here to target stores where for the rest of the month they are going to be offering free flu shots in the pharmacy for kids 4 to 18 years old. the problem is so many people have taken them up on the offer that there's almost no vaccine to be had. this store in albany had some of the last remaining doses. >> we placed an order for it and it was out for yesterday. so we just were fortunate enough to get a few doses from another store. >> reporter: and those won't last long. it's the same story everywhere as doctors and pharmacies try to accommodate a flood of patients. courtney keillor teaches nursing at usf and is helping promote a website called flu near you that can actually map the people who live and work around you who have been vaccinated. >> would we be better off if we started this before the flu season hit? >> definitely. definitely. but, you know, i think there is something about swine flu or, you know, this big fear

in cupertino this morning. investigators say that the pedestrian tried to cross foothill expressway by stevens creek boulevard when the truck hit her. sheriff's depth test are investigating the cause. san jose police arrested a hit-and-run suspect accused of driving into two cars. the crash on willow knocked over a light pole. police are investigating if the driver was drunk. in contra costa county, fire engulfed a car on i-80 westbound at san pablo road early this morning. cbs 5 videographer vince driving in the area pulled over and captured those images. nobody was hurt. and an eerie scene along the waterfront in crockett this morning. flames reflecting off that water as a fire destroyed a pier and old building at loring avenue and jackson street. this fire is being called suspicious. several fire stations in the east bay are closed for good tonight. a total of three stations in lafayette, martinez and walnut creek shut down today. the only firehouse in clayton

will be staffed part time. the closures will save the contra costa county fire protection district more than $1.5 million a year. voters had a chance to save the stations but they rejected a parcel tax measure in november. >> the people that will be most impacted will be the people that live within the area where the stations are being closed. right now, we anticipate on average about a minute to a minute and 15 seconds increase in response times. >> in about 20 minutes fire administrators will meet with the community in lafayette to talk about the station that closed in that city. the meeting will be held at the veterans memorial building on mount diablo boulevard. breaking news. yet another boeing 787 dreamliner has made an emergency landing. this latest problem in japan. the all nippon airways flight touched down at the airport after a cockpit message showed battery problems. the u.s. government is conducting a review to find out what caused those problems on

madera creek nearly a month after he disappeared. on christmas eve, kentfield police stopped 23-year-old anthony donaldson for a dui. he jumped in the creek and vanished. donaldson's body was found floating in the creek behind kent middle school last night. a suspected motorcycle thief is under arrest after a pursuit across the bay bridge ended in san francisco. it happened this afternoon at fifth and harrison where the motorcycle slammed into a waist oil truck. the chase began minutes earlier when the biker blew through the bay bridge toll plaza without paying. officers tried to pull him over on treasure island but he continued on into the city. after the crash, chp says the driver tried to run off leaving an injured female passenger behind. she will be okay, but the biker is behind bars. san francisco international airport could be getting a new name. supervisor david campos introduced a proposal today to

rename sfo after murdered supervisor harvey milk. milk was the first openly gay person to be elected to public office here in california. supporters of a plan say renaming the airport would be a symbol of hope and freedom for gays all over the world. new at 6:00, indulge me here, back in the day, working your way through college meant working minimum wage jobs sometimes more than one to afford the tuition but now some young women are seeking sugar daddies. cbs 5 reporter ann notarangelo tells us the trend is picking up at a couple of northern california universities. >> reporter: when i went to college, i waited tables and i worked in the dorms. it never dawned on me that there was a different service i could provide. >> i answer phones. get lunch for my boss. >> reporter: maybe that's an old-fashioned way of getting through school as college tuition climbs. more students are looking for better paying jobs with a different kind of boss. nationwide, hundreds of thousands of coeds are looking for an old rich man who will

pay for school turning to the website seekingarrangements.com. >> it's a dating website. you have a rich boyfriend. >> reporter: that's how the founder describes it. this sugar baby from florida international university says in addition to tuition, she has gotten cars, trips and jewelry and in return, she gives them -- >> sex. i'm okay with that. [ laughter ] >> it's degrading. not something to be proud of. >> reporter: according to the website they have 2 million members and coeds make up 49% of the membership. there is a 67% increase in berkeley in a year. uc-davis has seen a 220% increase with 93 sugar babies now on campus. the average co-ed makes about $3,000 a month and the arrangement can be for months or years. it doesn't have to involve sex and the website argues this is not prostitution. >> being a sugar baby is a

lifestyle essentially. these people are receiving monetary, you know, financial "help" and they are giving back companionship. >> reporter: now you can do anything. maybe it's the ultimate feminist act a way of taking care of yourself. >> i think it's somewhat degrading but if a woman is doing it is comfortable with it and is okay with what's happening, then that should be up to them. >> reporter: without passing judgment on the current sugar babies let me say this. i have two young daughters and i hope they get scholarships to go to college. but if they don't, i can always show them how to carry plates. in berkeley, ann notarangelo, cbs 5. facebook just launched a new way to search within the site and your connections. it's called graph search. the tool allows you to search anything that your facebook friends have shared. photos, posts or other interests. facebook is also taking to yelp

and linkedin. for example, with graph search you can look for a doctor or dentist linked by your friends. ceo mark zuckerberg says users can only search for content that has been shared with them. >> we'll see. let's go back to chief meteorologist paul deanno in our mobile weather lab. paul. >> i'll tell you what, there are so many cool bells and whistles in this new vehicle that we have the cbs 5 mobile weather lab. within of my favorite is the fact that since it's mobile and it's a car we can show you what's going on weather-wise once the vehicle gets there we can also show you what's going on weather-wise on the way there because of these two cameras. we have one facing in so we can do a live report sitting in the passenger seat on the way. we also have one camera facing out so we can show you the weather conditions while we drive and we can do that safely. now, the whole idea behind the cbs 5 mobile weather lab is the fact that the bay area has such unique weather. the weather in san rafael is not the same as san jose on a daily basis. the weather in our inland valleys is not the same as at the coast and the city of san

francisco has five or 10 different microclimates so we want to have a vehicle that can take you to the weather and show you the weather at that spot. i don't want to rely all the time on the san francisco airport weather data. i don't want to rely all the time on the oakland airport weather data. we want to go between those data locations and with the sensors that we have on top of the cbs 5 mobile weather lab, we will be able to do just that on a daily basis. it done have to be severe weather flooding or heavy rain or fog. it can be just a sunny day which can be anything from 55 to 95 degrees on a summer day. let's see what's going on today weather-wise. more of the 55 than 95 variety. i'll take you outside to san jose. a live picture there. we are going to show you what's going on with our highs for today which were a couple of degrees milder than the past few days but still, pretty chilly. half moon bay you hit 55. oakland 58. redwood city you hit 57. topping out only at 53 in san francisco. richmond 54. and concord today you barely made it to 50 degrees. milder than yesterday, yes.

but only by a couple of degrees. cbs 5 hi-def doppler radar the strong he was in the bay area, is 100% dry and will stay that way for a while with a big dome of high pressure sitting over top of us. how big? the northern extent of this ridge of high pressure is about 200 miles north of vancouver british columbia. a huge swirl. with high pressure over california the atmosphere will warm up and high pressure will allow us to warm up every day into the weekend. so what to expect? the coldest air is gone. afternoons will get mild. highs close to 60 degrees all the way into next week starting tomorrow inland starting thursday near the bay. high temperatures tomorrow:

>> reporter: are you mad? >> i'm mad. >> reporter: this gun buy-back happened at 5 locations in marin county today: at the novato police station, the line snaked down the street. and business also brisk at the central marin police authority. so brisk, in fact, that the $43,000 raised for the program was gone in about an hour. >> i'm very gratified by what we have seen as far as weapons being turned in. and it is more than i expected to be honest. >> reporter: marin county district attorney ed about your bearian spearheaded this program and says with no more cash on hand, officers had to begin handing out vouchers. if the he is able to raise more money in 30 days, and berberian believes it could be worth it. >> you know, just one gun out of the home might save a child's life. >> reporter: and i just spoke with the d.a. he says they have collected about 300 guns so far and you can still turn in the guns for

vouchers until about 8:00 tonight. you can donate money to the program. and a check to the marin county d.a.'s office but in the subject line of your checkmark, gun buy-back. for that $43,000, most of the money is private. a lot of people just wanted to do something after sandy hook. >> since it was so successful, are they going to do it again? >> they hope to. originally they had scheduled for january 21st. but they had so many people come today they ran out of money as you saw. they want to fundraise and make that announcement tomorrow so just wait and see. >> all the old ones, melt down, get rid of them. >> reporter: unless they find they are stolen and then give them back to the victims. >> thanks, grace. president obama will announce steps to curb gun violence tomorrow. the president over recommendations with vice president joe bide today. he will announce the proposal surrounded by children who wrote him in the wake of the

sandy hook shooting. >> the president is committed. he is not naive. >> the president is expected to push for an assault weapons ban, expanded background checks and limited sales of high capacity magazines. new york lawmakers just passed the toughest gun restrictions in the country. the law includes an immediate ban on semi-automatic rifles and pistols with any military- style feature. it also seeks to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill. democratic governor cuomo signed the measure into lawless than an hour after it passed the legislature. the national rifle association is taking some heat for a new app that puts a virtual gun in anyone's hands. but in the wake of the sandy hook tragedy, is that really a good idea? cbs 5 reporter don ford on what the nra says is its true aim. >> reporter: many first person shooter games promote mass slaughter of people and mass destruction. now the national rifle association is taking aim with

its own version of a videogame called practice range. public relations strategist rachel kay says this is a big step for the nra. >> in the past, they have pointed fingers at videogames. they have pointed fingers at hollywood for contributing to the recent violence. and, you know, with this app they kind of run the risk of sending conflicting messages. >> reporter: nobody gets shot and there's no blood in the nra game. it features three common target ranges. each separated by firearms safety tips. >> it seems to me more of a learning tool than a videogame. >> reporter: this nra certified firearms instructor isn't impressed. >> i think it would be really, really tough to link this to inciting violence. this is almost cartoonish technology looks like something early atari videogame. certainly in the realistic. >> reporter: the game is targeting an audience of kids 4 and up. although the level of violence

in the new nra app doesn't rise to the level seen in mainstream videogames, coming on the heels of the organization's criticism of the gaming industry makes the timing of its release a bit awkward. in the east bay, don ford, cbs 5. a northern california police officer has been killed in the line of duty. it happened late this morning in the small city of galt about halfway between sacramento and stockton. investigators say the two officers were responding to a burglary at an apartment complex when they spotted the suspect walking nearby. witnesses say when the officers confronted the man, he pulled a gun. >> witnessed the officer struggling with the subject and the struggles and i heard two, three shots fired. >> 31 yearly officer kevin [indiscernible ] was hit and killed and the suspect committed suicide.

cockpit window as well as computer problems. for years he lied about it, now he is admitted it. lance armstrong told oprah winfrey he did use performance- enhancing drugs. cbs reporter vinita nair has more on the tell-all interview with oprah. >> we're all excited. >> reporter: oprah winfrey gave "cbs this morning" some details about her much-anticipated exclusive interview with lance armstrong. >> the answers that people around the world have been waiting to hear were answered and certainly answered -- i can only say i was satisfied by the answers. >> reporter: armstrong was stripped of his seven tour de france titles after the u.s. anti-doping agency found overwhelming evidence he took performance-enhancing drugs. up until now, the cyclist strongly denied the allegations. >> we were mesmerized and riveted by some of his answers. >> reporter: winfrey chose to speak with "cbs this morning" because she is of course close friends with anchor gayle king.

several days, weeks, months and years. we'll have it for a while. but this vehicle is better equipped to show you what's going on weather-wise than most other vehicles. it's a satellite truck. satellite technology has been around for a while. this satellite truck, the cbs 5 mobile weather lab, is also equipped with cell phone technology. that's very important. if there's heavy rain or snow, you can't get a satellite signal. but if you have a cell phone backup, you can get into the worst of the weather and actually send out a live signal and show you what's going on. for thing this has because it's a toyota highlander hybrid, it kind of acts as its own generatedder so you don't need a generator with you. you can just basically get in this vehicle, go wherever you want. and show what's going on weather-wise and we are going to be doing that. we are doing it tonight in san francisco. and just telling you how chilly it is outside but when the weather is different in the summertime when those microclimates get going or heavy rain in the north bay snow up to mount diablo we'll go there with the cbs 5 mobile weather lap.
